Lost 5 Stone

“Doing the Motivation programme was the first time I saw something through from start to finish, and that proved an invaluable lesson for me. Now, three years later and fitter than ever, I hardly recognise the person I used to be. I took up cycling and have done several charity cycles, including 200km Dublin to Galway in a day.
“I recently took my interest to the next level and tried my hand at racing. I was pretty dismal at it, but even though I was last, I kept pedalling round that track until I’d finished. To my surprise, somebody who trains racing cyclists took me on. I asked him why – my performance was nothing to write home about – and he said, ‘Simple – you don’t give up. You’re so driven.’
“I bring that right back to Motivation. It’s not about the diet, it’s about the programme
, the homework, and the discovery that you can achieve this… And when you do, you realise that anything is possible.
“My wife Deirdre praises me for setting such a good example for our two daughters, Sophie, 10, and Grace, 6. There are times I can hardly believe myself what I’ve achieved – and I attribute it all to Motivation. Nothing else had shown me why my weight had crept up to over 17 stone.
“At Motivation I learned that I was rewarding myself with food. All those trips to the gym meant nothing when I followed them up with a takeaway meal, the greasier the better. Now I reward myself by buying a new gadget for the bike, or treating Deirdre or the kids.
“The weight started falling off and before long, people took a second glance before saying, ‘Oh my god, it’s you!’ I got that a lot. Now, when I look at the things I’ve achieved, I sometimes think to myself, ‘Oh my god, it’s you!’ – and I don’t mean physically. It turns out, I’m a never-give-up kind of guy. Who knew?
“Motivation released my potential and I couldn’t be happier with the person I’ve become.”
