What Sugar is really doing to us
The two things that determine changes in obesity are genetics and environment. We are now twenty five pounds heavier on average than we were twenty five years ago and genetics haven’t changed. What has changed is our environment, and clearly not for the better.
In 1972 John Yudkin first proved that sugar was poison to the human body, but he was ignored by the majority of the medical profession and rubbished by the food industry. Instead low fat was hailed to be the way forward as fat in food was blamed for rising obesity problems. But oh how right Yudkin was. As a fellow Dr and author Dr Lustig asked the question in his book “”Fat Chance: The Bitter Truth About Sugar” whether people would accept food companies lacing breakfast cereal with morphine in order to sell more of it. This emphasizes his conviction that food companies were greedy enough to add sugar or HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) to foods regardless of the horrendous health implications. Some health campaigners compare its addictive properties to those of cocaine and heroin.
But such is the magnitude of power of these global manufacturers that they have been able to shout louder and quieten the medical and scientific experts. So here we are in January 2016 when the consumption of sugar is higher than ever despite the warnings. Shock waves reverberating around Ireland when it comes into the media as if this is a new scientific discovery! Where have people been?
My theory is this: Consumers have made strides against sugar but only in its obvious refined form. Patting oneself on the back for quitting sugar in tea and coffee and refusing the sweet biscuits has made people feel they’re doing okay but the reality is that this is only the tip of the iceberg. Ignorance is bliss, convenience crucial. Processed foods like pizzas, nuggets, yoghurts, even low fat meals are laced with the poisonous ingredients because it makes them taste good!
We have been fooled into believing we’re relatively healthy because the sugar industry did its best to suppress the evidence that sugar was toxic. Scientific evidence going back to the 60’s was swept under the carpet and the price we’re paying is high, not to mention the catastrophic future our children have yet to experience. We have been led to believe that sugar was “energy” leading to rampant addiction and obesity levels like never before.
Dr Maurice Larocque founder of Motivation Weight Management clinics has warned of the effects of sugar and High Fructose Corn Syrup for years. He has repeatedly claimed and written several articles about sugar being the cause of the obesity epidemic thus his design of protein and fibre rich, low carbohydrate, healthy eating plans for fat loss and health improvements for patients. He was ahead of his time as he also realised that overweight people were victims of the food industry and needed nutritional guidance as well as psychological input to improve their health and change their thinking to lose weight and keep it off.
In his book “BE THIN THROUGH MOTIVATION” Dr Larocque explains the consequences of empty calories in sugar summing it up in the words “With sugar, man has refined the art of killing himself.”
The isolated voice of Yudkin who died in 1995 may have lost his battle with the sugar giants of the last 40 years but the time has come when his army of followers won’t be silenced as they fight to expose what’s right for public health.
