When Weight Loss Isn't Weight Loss

I’m still emotionally connected to the podcasts I recorded with Stuart Wilson. Stuart touched on so many pinch points that I find myself trying to piece the jigsaw together.

What jigsaw?

The jigsaw of life.

And as life would have it, this is no ordinary jigsaw. It’s thousands of pieces, has a jigsaw on each side and to make it almost impossible, some of the pieces change shape.

If I gave you such a jigsaw and didn’t tell you of its complexities and challenges, I’ve no doubt the levels of frustration and indeed, anger it would cause.

However, if you were privy to the rules of that jigsaw, then, at least you know what’s in store and the challenge is less stressful.

So it is with life and if we can understand some of the key pieces, then as they change shape we are better placed to accommodate them. In the context of the three podcasts with Stuart, some of those critical pieces are:

  • Life space
  • Bidding
  • Embedding
  • Interiority
  • Integrated
  • Red zones
  • Receptive
  • Risk taking

Any number of people will set about to lose weight, mostly in an unstructured and non-evidence based way. Weight loss is celebrated but it’s short lived. In most instances, weight gain reoccurs and is now coupled with frustration and anger.

That’s what I mean when I say, when weight loss isn’t weight loss.

Unless you investigate those habits, behaviours and attitudes that are at the root of the issue, you’re not going to achieve long-term weight management. It’s called weight management as the key is in maintaining the weight you have lost.

Offline, Stuart told me of an 80-year-old man who was attending his clinic so as to try and reconnect with his 60 year-old son, from whom he’d grown apart. Stuart worked on the concept of bidding (along with other jigsaw pieces) so that the bridge building could take effect.

The point of everything above is that it’s important to spend time learning. No matter what age you are, there are life lessons to take away and apply to your own life or perhaps, to the life of someone very close to you.
